Medical Report: Pandemic decisions must be based on evidence

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The coronavirus continues to mutate and evolve, and what have we learned from the experience?

It has not received a great deal of attention, but Dr. Anthony Fauci granted an extensive interview in the Journal of the American Medical Association, in which he opens up about the initial months of the pandemic.

Fauci says that he wishes he could have been more effective in conveying the message that, when there is a real-time, evolving pandemic, decisions need to be based on evidence. People can’t go with hunches or popular choices.

The message that viruses change, and therefore methods to fight the virus also change, was not communicated well enough. A barrier that he could not control was people unintentionally or sometimes intentionally making statements and critical decisions not based on scientific fact
