Medical Report: Why planning for a worst-case scenario is important

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — We don’t like to think about it, but planning for the future is an important part of a health care plan.

When we think about the future, most of us try to think about good things, and there is nothing wrong with approaching life that way. But it is occasionally important to consider a worst-case scenario.

What if an accident or an illness makes you incapable of speaking for yourself or making critical decisions about your own care? There are documents called advance directives that can help ensure the decisions that are made are yours.

Only 37% of Americans have advance directives — documents like a living will, medical power of attorney, or a do-not-resuscitate document. You can get these documents from your hospital or the Department of Aging.

Make certain your wishes are followed.
