Medical Report: Summer is ending, but skin cancer risk is not

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Labor Day is the traditional end of the summer season. However, summer isn't over until the end of the month, and there are some risks associated with spending too much time in the sun.

The numbers are somewhat dramatic. It is estimated that, in a typical five-year period, there are an average of 3 million cases of nonmelanoma skin cancer in the United States and about 90,000 new cases of melanoma. The leading risk factor is leaving skin unprotected for too long in the sun.

As we move into the fall, the risks don't go away. The sun can do damage any time of year, and many of us underestimate the exposure that can occur while driving. Another risk factor — tanning beds.

The key to preventing skin cancer later is reducing exposure throughout the year.
