PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man has been arrested after his car crashed into an apartment building at 50th and Walnut streets in West Philadelphia early Monday morning, sending one person to the hospital.

It happened around 3:30 a.m. Police said a 35-year-old man in a blue Tesla struck a police cruiser at 49th and Spruce streets. Officers said they attempted to position their patrol car to block the Tesla, but the man drove off. Police said he refused several commands to park and get out of the Tesla before he drove north toward 50th and Walnut streets, where he hit a white sedan, and ultimately crashed into a first-floor apartment.

The front half of the Tesla went through the window, exposing the living room of the apartment.

Scarlett Delorme lives in the apartment building. She was sleeping in a basement bedroom right below where the car crashed.

“We just heard a loud crash, like crazy crash, and we’re like, oh my God, what happened? We jumped up and then we could hear shuffling in the room. So I was like, oh my God, someone is in the house,” she said. “I opened that door — this car was in the window in the wall there, and it was smoking still.”

Her photography studio is on the first floor, where the Tesla crashed.

Afterward, Delorme and her boyfriend found a man bleeding heavily from his hand. He was injured in the second crash and taken to the hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.

Police said the man fled on foot after the crash. They later found him at a residence on the 4900 block of Spruce Street and arrested him.

He faces several charges, including leaving the scene of an accident, aggravated assault, and related offenses.
