Medical Report: The health impact of Thanksgiving

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Hundreds of thousands of Americans today will be eating turkey — or, as a result of high prices or personal preference, many others will be celebrating with another dinner choice. Whether it’s turkey, tofu or Chinese takeout, it’s safe to say the vast majority of us will be consuming more calories than normal.

With the exception of people with serious illnesses, the health impact of a heavy Thanksgiving dinner is very limited. One meal does not make a major difference in our overall caloric intake, and some people argue it is actually quite healthy to take a break from moderation and enjoy some extra calories.

Remember, for those fortunate to spend time with family or close friends, the psychological benefit of being together far outweighs the damage of that old family recipe.
