PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The American Academy of Sleep Medicine may be one of the most important but least-known organizations in medicine. It is one of the leading organizations focusing on insomnia, which affects 30% of the population in the United States.
Insomnia is defined as a disruption of initiation, duration and/or quality of sleep. Insomnia is diagnosed when people have these symptoms three times per week.
According to the academy, the most important steps may be stress reduction and counseling. Many people need guidance about sleep hygiene, such as making the bedroom a sleep haven.
Changing diet and exercise schedules can also have a major impact.
