PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — You may be missing out on a screening test that could be a lifesaver.
An abdominal aortic aneurysm is an enlargement in the wall of the aorta, the major blood vessel that runs right through the middle of the chest and belly. In many cases these aneurysms stay silent, but in some people, they can grow rapidly and rupture.
Smokers are at increased risk. Men are also more likely to develop an aneurysm. The chances of having an aneurysm — and of one rupturing — increase as we age.
Men who have been smokers are strongly encouraged to be screened with an abdominal ultrasound when they turn 65.
