PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It is hard to imagine that what we eat can impact the environment. The food choices of wealthier nations can impact climate change, which can lead to starvation in other parts of the world.
We now produce three times the meat and twice the amount of milk as we did in 1973. Livestock now accounts for as much as 50% of methane and 60% of nitrous oxide emissions.
If each of us were to make a concentrated effort to eat more plant-based food and turn to options like the Mediterranean diet, not only would it be healthier for us but it would also healthier for our environment.
Individually, the change is gradual, but the global impact could be dramatic.
