PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Three Delaware County men indicted for election fraud have pleaded guilty in a deal with federal prosecutors.
Mohammad Nurul Hasan and Mohammad Munsur Ali, who were both members of the Millbourne Borough Council, and Mohammad Rafikul Islam, a former member, all pleaded guilty to conspiracy, giving false information, and fraudulent voter registration.
Authorities said the trio ran a scheme in which they forged ballots to try to get Hasan elected as mayor of Millbourne Borough.
Hasan lost the primary mayoral race in May 2021 but continued in the general election as a write-in candidate. However, prosecutors said Hasan and Ali asked friends who did not live in Millbourne for personal information so they could change their addresses to the borough and write in Hasan’s name.
Authorities said they changed their addresses on the Pennsylvania voter registration website, diverting the mail-in ballots of nearly three dozen people. Hasan still lost the race.
Hasan faced the most counts. He pleaded guilty to all 33 charges against him. Ali and Islam pleaded guilty to 25 and seven counts against them, respectively.
They are scheduled to be sentenced in June. Each faces up to five years behind bars.
