PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 17-year-old has been charged in the fatal shooting of an Upper Darby High School student over the weekend.
According to officials, 16-year-old Khalief Webster was shot after an apparent argument with Michael Nixon near Long Lane and Pine Street shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday.
The incident was caught on surveillance video, which helped officials quickly push out images of the believed person of interest.
Police issued search warrants and spoke with two of Nixon’s family members before he turned himself in Tuesday night.
Nixon, who police say is a former Upper Darby student, is charged as an adult with first-degree murder and carrying a firearm without a license. He is being held without bail.
Webster, who was a student athlete, is the second Upper Darby High School student shot and killed in recent months. In March, 15-year-old Zahkir Whitfield was shot and killed on a SEPTA bus in West Philadelphia.
“I’m sad, disappointed and even angry to be here yet again at a press conference talking about a senseless crime and the loss of a youth,” said Upper Darby Mayor Ed Brown.
