NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Mullica Township police say their offices are off-limits after environmental experts discovered mold and raw sewage inside their headquarters.
Township officials addressed the findings at an emergency meeting Friday.
Video taken by officers shows water pouring from underneath a heater, a buckled wall and mold growth at Mullica Township Police Department.
Barbara Sarraf, wife of Detective Paul Sarraf, told our partners at NBC10 the mold was caused, in part, by fecal matter leaking into the station.
"They … found there was a broken septic pipe,” Sarraf said. “They don’t know how long it had been broken for, but I have seen leaking raw sewage into the soil into the septic, which was going into the building."
She said there are several other types of mold and spores.
But retired Police Officer Vincent Serzan says that wasn't all officers dealt with in his 23 years on the force.
"They had mouse droppings in the ceilings, guys were getting respiratory problems, that kind of thing."
Officials say they're expecting an action plan by Monday for repairs and cleaning, including timeline and cost estimates.
"These guys risk their lives out there doing the job on the street. You have to have proper accommodations to do the job."
For now, Mullica police are operating out of a local courtroom.
