NORRISTOWN, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Montgomery County has relocated its 9/11 memorial to a new site in Norristown.
The 18-foot monument, made of a steel I-beam recovered from the North Tower of the World Trade Center, made a 45-minute trip from the Montgomery County Emergency Operations Center in Eagleville to its new home in Norristown’s Elmwood Park.
Norristown Fire Chief Tom O’Donnell said it’s an ideal place, sitting in front of the Fire Chief’s Memorial pavilion.
“It’s heartwarming to see this monument go to a public place in front of our Fire Chief’s Memorial,” he said. “The families from those people from Montgomery County that were killed in 9/11, they can come and visit this.”
Every summer, the pavilion features music and dance performances. It’s also close to the Elmwood Park Zoo.
The 9/11 memorial, which depicts two hands grasping upward, was ordered by county commissioners in 2003 and installed at the courthouse in 2005. It was relocated to the Emergency Operations Center in 2021 for the reconstruction of the Montgomery County Justice Center.
This will be the permanent home of the memorial. A rededication ceremony will take place on Friday, Sept. 11, at 10 a.m.
