More capacity restrictions coming to Delaware to curb COVID-19 spread

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- Businesses in Delaware will have some new restrictions to follow, set to take effect at 8 a.m. Monday. Gov. John Carney says he's concerned about the surge in cases.

There are new capacity limits for businesses, depending on the size. Restaurants and most retail shops are capped at 30% of fire code capacity. Small stores less than 5,000 square feet in size will be limited to 40%, and larger locations with more than 100,000 square feet are limited to 20% capacity.

Bars and restaurants must close at 10 p.m. Gyms can remain open but must adhere to the capacity limits, and fitness classes must be 10 people or fewer. Exercise machines and equipment must be at least 10 feet apart.

Employees are not included in these calculations for capacity limits.

Houses of worship are capped at 40% capacity.

This is all in addition to the stay-at-home advisory and mask mandates previously announced. Carney said he wants everyone to wear a mask if they will be indoors with anyone from outside their household, even if it's family or friends.

Carney says these steps are being taken to protect lives and prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed. And there is a form available online for anyone who needs to report a business for non-compliance.
