PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A motorcyclist was struck and killed in West Philadelphia Saturday.

Police say the 47-year-old man was riding down South Belmont Avenue near Westminster Avenue just after 1 a.m. when a driver in a stolen Chevy Camaro traveling at a high rate of speed crashed into him.

Police say the driver was allegedly fleeing a car meet-up at the Lowe’s parking lot at 1500 N. 50th Street when it bypassed a stopped SEPTA bus, entered oncoming traffic and ran a red light before striking the man.

The motorcyclist’s body flew about 40 feet into the street, causing his motorcycle to hit a car.

The driver then fled the scene on foot but was caught on N. 44th Street.

Police say a 23-year-old passenger inside the Camaro was injured and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Police say about an hour before that incident, a man on a motorcycle was fatally struck in South Philadelphia after running a red light on 2200 Snyder Avenue.
