PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Mural Arts Philadelphia and the Free Library brought together artists from all over the city to create a free city-wide art exhibition.
The project will be unveiled later this month.
Project Manager Todd Bressi and his colleagues Susana Urminska and David Coleman Jr. pulled back the curtain on their City Wide Print project “Printmaking by the People” at the Parkway Central Library in preparation for America’s 250th anniversary.
“Anticipating the big moment arriving, we set ourselves up to the project of trying to find out what people would say if they got to write the Declaration of Independence themselves,” Bressi said.
They hosted 35 workshops across the city, with more than 1,000 participants over two years.
“What we asked people to do in the workshops was to create a poster using old-fashioned printing techniques and we have over 1 thousand posters,” he said.
Encouraged to add their own twist, artists used over 10 different printmaking techniques.
“There’s typography, color, silk screening. There’s Cyanotype,” the artist shared.
“Printmaking by the People” opens at Shakespeare Park outside of the Parkway Central Library on Vine Street on April 16th at 5:30 pm.
