CAMDEN, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A community fun day in Camden Saturday saw a new nonprofit looking to put smiles on kids' faces.
"We're giving out shoes free! Shoes and socks!" called Dawn Lewis, founder of Shoes For Your Soul. Their mission is to make sure kids have new kicks that fit perfectly, so they look good and feel good in order to perform their best in school.
"You know, the smiles on these children's faces, you just can't get anything better. Nothing is better than that," she said.
Lewis has big goals, too. She wants to open a store so kids can pick out a free pair of shoes and experience first class treatment.
"We will have a nonprofit shoe store in the city of Camden," she declared, "the first of its kind."
But Lewis and her team need help.
"We're looking to get sponsored by Nike, Adidas, all the shoe brands," she said.
As the seventh of eight children in her family, Lewis said she understands how important it is for kids to get new shoes, not hand-me-downs, and that's why she works so hard to deliver for them.
