SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — New Jersey Route 70 is getting a major upgrade from Route 38 in Pennsauken, Camden County to Cooper Avenue Evesham in Burlington County. The 9-mile section of Route 70 through Cherry Hill is one of the most congested roads in the area.

State transportation officials are looking to solve several on-going problems with one massive project.

New Jersey Department of Transportation Assistant Commissioner Parth Oza says the state is spending $151 million to repave that stretch of road, make important infrastructure upgrades to improve storm drainage and replace old gas and water lines.

“To help the traffic flow better, we’re also replacing and upgrading traffic signals at 28 intersections with some of the latest technology that is currently available,” said Oza.

“The improvements are not just for motorists. NJ DOT is also making pedestrian safety improvements by relaxing deteriorated sidewalks and adding new sidewalks along the corridor.”

Cherry Hill Mayor Susan Shin Angulo is thankful for this investment in her community.

“Not only because of the planned beautification, but also because of the benefits and quality of life that will improve for our residents,” she said.

Assembly Majority Leader Rep. Lou Greenwald, D-Voorhees, said this area has seen increased development over the past several years with new businesses. He says government officials must find ways to retain those businesses, and one way is by improving traffic conditions.

“Those businesses expect a commitment and a partnership that we’re going to make the necessary investment into the infrastructure to make this work,” said Greenwald.

The project is expected to be completed in the winter of 2026.
