SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Payments for the state’s ANCHOR property tax rebate went out earlier this year, but not everyone got it. Lawmakers have made enrollment in the program automatic for next year.

Under the ANCHOR program, homeowners under the age of 65, earning $150,000 and under, are entitled to receive $1,500. And those earning between $150,001 and $250,000 will receive $1,000. Renters over the age of 65 who earn less than $150,000 will receive $700. Renters who are 64 and under will receive $450.

Renewal of the ANCHOR program was a big item in the New Jersey state budget, but not everybody knew about it, and some didn’t sign up in time.

Assemblyman Paul Moriarty, D–Washington Township, says he’s spoken to far too many people who missed out on the first round of rebates.

“The money is there. We are going to try to get them the money even if they failed to apply earlier this year," Moriarty said.

People who have already signed up can expect to see another deposit in their account in October to cover next year’s tax bill, Moriarty says.

“By making it automatic, it’s much easier for Treasury to streamline the process.”

There is still time for those who missed this year’s deadline.

“I’m urging people to still apply, and we’re still going to try to get you the last ANCHOR tax rebate, and we’re going to try to get you the one coming up.”

Moriarty says applicants will be rejected — but, he says, lawmakers will help people with appeals. Questions can go to the ANCHOR hotline at 877-658-2972.
