PENNSAUKEN, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — As excitement builds ahead of the World Cup, New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill visited Camden County Wednesday morning to announce fan events happening all over the state, funded by a multimillion-dollar state grant.

One of Sherrill’s top priorities has been to ensure the fanfare and economic benefit of hosting the World Cup would be felt in all corners of New Jersey.

“I’m hoping in every corner they catch World Cup fever. The New Jersey World Cup Community Initiative will launch 34 fan zones,” she said.

“Together with the [New Jersey Economic Development Authority], we’re awarding $5 million in grants to organizations across our state that will host both one-time events and long-term events showcasing beaches, boardwalks, benefitting small businesses and bringing excitement to your back door.”

Events include a watch party at Cooper River Park for the World Cup final, a soccer festival for kids along the Camden waterfront and more.

“And communities across the state will host local watch parties,” Sherrill added.

Sherrill says only a limited number of fans, mostly visitors, will attend the actual games. These events — scheduled for Haddon Heights, Atlantic City, Burlington, Camden and more — are designed to ensure locals get in on the action as well.

“Hosting the World Cup is a once in a generation opportunity for New Jersey. It’s going to bring revenue to our small businesses and local vendors who could really see the economic impact.” she said.

“It’s going to draw visitors from around the world. It’s going to bring communities together all over our state.”
