PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A youth flag football referee in Gloucester County, New Jersey, is accused of strangling a coach.

Edward McKinnie Jr., 47, of Blackwood, was refereeing a flag football game at the Franklin Township Sports Complex Sunday afternoon. Police said a 46-year-old man from Newfield was coaching one of the teams and took issue with a call, which led to an argument between the two.

Witnesses told Franklin Township police that McKinnie strangled the coach, and some spectators had to separate them.

Gloucester County EMS treated the coach for his injuries.

McKinnie is charged with second-degree aggravated assault and has been released until a future court appearance.
