SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Law enforcement officials in New Jersey said their efforts to combat human trafficking during the World Cup resulted in dozens of arrests.
Cities and states hosting big sporting events often see spikes in human trafficking. Authorities said during the 39 days of the World Cup, including eight matches at MetLife Stadium, there were 71 human trafficking arrests and 97 victims rescued throughout New Jersey.
New Jersey Assistant Attorney General Katherine Calle said dozens of law enforcement agencies worked hand in hand to make these arrests, with help from the public, who reported red flags.
“Even though the World Cup is now behind us, we won’t let up in our efforts to keep our state safe,” she said. “We will continue our commitment to excellence in policing, our commitment to combating human trafficking.”
For police throughout New Jersey, another big victory was the fact that hundreds of thousands of fans enjoyed the matches safely, without any major incidents.
The state Attorney General’s Office also announced the arrests of 26-year-old Tamir Brown-Miller, of Philadelphia, and 25-year-old Dezeree Smith, of Collingswood. Both face numerous charges for allegedly sex trafficking a minor in Cherry Hill, Atlantic City, and Pennsylvania between July and October of last year.
