MARLTON, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Police in South Jersey are searching for a man who tried to rob a Mattress Warehouse earlier this week. Police say he attacked a store employee and locked her in a closet.
It happened Wednesday night around 6:30 at the mattress chain's Evesham location on Route 70, near Route 73.
Police say a man, wearing all black and a face covering, entered the store and demanded money from the only employee inside. The suspect was believed to be armed with a knife.
Police said he physically attacked the employee and locked her in a closet.
The employee was able to break free and run to a nearby restaurant for help. One of the restaurant employees, who did not want to be identified, told NBC10 what the victim told her about the attacker.
“She said he came in the side door and just ran at her,” she said. “I don’t know how she escaped but she was pretty banged up. Her face was bleeding and her teeth were bloody. She had a gash in her head.”
The restaurant worker called 911. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment. Officials say her injuries are non-life-threatening.
“She was really shaken up,” the restaurant employee added, “couldn’t even get out exactly what happened.”
Police don’t believe the attacker got away with anything. Anyone with information is urged to call Evesham police at 856-983-1116.
