SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — A New Jersey state trooper is facing charges in connection with a high-speed chase that ended with a fatal motorcycle crash in Burlington County two years ago.

The state alleges Det. Mark Campagna put himself and others at risk back on June 20, 2023, when he engaged in a high-speed chase with a man on a motorcycle, weaving through traffic at more than 100 miles per hour in Springfield Township.

The 24-year-old motorcyclist, Omar Kebbabi, of Astoria, New York, died after crashing into an oncoming car at the intersection of Route 206 and Jacksonville Road.

Investigators said Campagna was in an unmarked car and not working on an assigned shift when he chased Kebbabi for at least 3 miles. They said Campagna never activated his lights or sirens.

The New Jersey attorney general said a grand jury indicted Campagna after an investigation into the crash by the AG’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability.

Campagna is facing a fourth-degree endangerment charge, with potentially 18 months in jail if convicted.
