SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — A fifth grade teacher is accused of sexually assaulting one of her students over the course of four years. Authorities say she eventually got pregnant by the boy and gave birth to a baby.
Laura Caron, 34, of Cape May Court House began sexually abusing the boy in the summer of 2016, following his 5th grade year at Middle Township Elementary School, when he was 11 years old, according to court documents.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, Caron and the boy’s family became friendly that summer, and eventually the boy went from spending nights at her house to living there full time along with his brother.
The victim’s brother told police that Caron and the boy often slept in the same bed and that he witnessed them being intimate multiple times.
The investigation began in December, after the boy’s father commented on a Facebook image of Caron’s 5-year-old son, saying he looks a lot like him and his son. In the time since, police say, the victim has confirmed that the assaults by Caron took place between 2016 and 2020 and that he is the father.
Authorities took Caron into custody Wednesday. She is held at the Cape May County jail, charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
"Teachers hold a position of great trust, and the allegations in this case represent a deeply troubling breach of that trust," Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland said in an official statement.
Middle Township School District has been notified and is offering counseling and support services to students, staff and families.
The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office is asking that anyone with information pertinent to the case call the Special Victims Unit at 609-465-1135, or also leave an anonymous tip on the Cape May County Prosecutor’s website, the Cape May County Sheriffs Tip Line or by phone at Cape May County Crime Stoppers, 609-889-3597.
