PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — New Jersey Transit’s CEO will resign next month.

Kevin Corbett, the longest-serving CEO in NJ Transit history, is leaving the transit agency for a job in academia. Gov. Phil Murphy said Corbett’s leadership has been unwavering and wished him luck in his next chapter.

Corbett led NJ Transit for seven years. This summer was an especially rough one for the transit agency, as it was plagued by delays and cancelations.

A successor has not been announced, but it’s an important decision as the World Cup in 2026 will likely be a test of NJ Transit’s capacity and capabilities.

Corbett’s resignation goes into effect Jan. 15.
