PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A New Jersey State Police detective involved in a deadly shooting in West Berlin nearly a year ago will not be facing charges.
A grand jury voted not to file criminal charges against the unidentified officer in connection with the death of Shawn Phillips, 37, of West Berlin.
Phillips was shot and killed after an encounter with detectives assigned to a U.S. Marshals Service fugitive task force on July 29, 2025.
According to the New Jersey Attorney General's office, Phillips was being observed as part of an investigation when a detective spotted him on the front porch of a home and ordered him not to move.
Phillips allegedly pulled out a gun. That was when one of the detectives shot Phillips three times, killing him. Law enforcement recovered a loaded revolver at the scene.
The grand jury declined to charge the officer after reviewing police radio transmissions, body-worn camera and surveillance videos, witness and law enforcement statements, a ballistics report, and autopsy results.
