“There was no breakfast provided to our students at that school this [Tuesday] morning because there was no one on hand at the time to get access to the food,” said Monica Lewis, the School District of Philadelphia’s deputy chief of communications.

“There was a manager who was running late. There was a person who had tested positive for COVID and was obviously unable to report to work, and another individual who was assigned there simply did not show up,” Lewis told KYW Newsradio.

The manager arrived in time to serve lunch to the high school’s 300 students, Lewis said.

The school district is informing principals of how to unlock refrigerators, in the event that food service workers are unavailable.

“Principals or other school administrators will be made aware of the combination to the lockbox if they need to access the refrigerator if those individuals who are assigned the responsibility of food services aren’t able to be there, or if there’s a problem,” Lewis said.

A similar situation played out at Mitchell Elementary in Kingsessing last September, prompting the school’s principal to order pizza to feed her students.
