PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- With a return to colder weather just around the corner, the experts say it's time to get your car or SUV ready for winter.
Jana Tidwell of AAA Mid-Atlantic said it's critical to take a few steps now to avoid some aggravation later.
"Take your car to a reputable mechanic. Have everything checked out, especially your tires and your car battery," Tidwell advised.
"What many people don't realize: Extreme cold temperatures kill car batteries. So, if your car hasn't been driven the way it typically is, or it hasn't been typically serviced, head into your mechanic. Have the battery checked."
Tidwell said it's also important to get the pressure and tread depth on the tires checked.
She also advised getting into the habit of keeping your gas tank full for the coming months just in case you get stuck in a traffic because of bad weather.
"So, take a few extra minutes when you see that gas tank get to the half-way mark. Fill it up and just have that peace of mind when you head out on the roadways," Tidwell said. "If anything should happen, at the very least you have a full tank of gas."
And, she advised, it's time to start assembling an emergency kit.
"Jumper cables, ice scraper, a brush to remove snow and debris from your car, first aid kit, flashlight with working batteries," Tidwell said. "But some other things that we recommend you add to that kit would be rock salt or kitty litter in case you get stuck in an ice situation and you need some more traction behind those tires."
She added it's also a good idea to carry a collapsible shovel, a blanket, extra gloves and scarves, and some non-perishable snacks.
