PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Getting your COVID-19 vaccine apparently lessens the desire to call it a career.
“Since a lot of our seniors now are vaccinated or getting vaccinated, I feel like they feel more comfortable in returning back to work,” said Yolanda Burnett with JEVS Human Services, headquartered in Philadelphia.
Burnett runs a free program called Career Solutions for 55+, which provides the resources needed for people those ages to find a job.
She said they’ve been getting a lot of calls lately. Some come from seniors who maybe retired just before the pandemic started, and retirement wasn’t going as planned.
“Then we have those who have been recently laid off from work and may have been on jobs for 20-plus years, and they’re not used to going online and filling out applications, or they’re not used to the new technology or virtual interviewing,” added Burnett.
Burnett believes technology like ZOOM can be scary for a senior at first who isn’t familiar with it. They might initially be hesitant using it, but she sees them getting the hang of it quickly.
She also advises seniors who may not want too much on their plate at first to find a remote job, like customer service or data entry.
“Employers are hiring, so don’t let your age hinder you from getting back out there,” said Burnett.
