CHERRY HILL, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Wheels are in motion for a big change at the Cherry Hill Mall, as a massive nine-story office tower is being taken down to make room for a new store.
One Cherry Hill, an office tower near Macy’s at the mall, has been a fixture since 1970, but soon it will be razed — “to make room for a 120,000 square-foot sporting goods retail space and an additional 10,000 square feet of outdoor space and a synthetic turf field,” said Mayor David Fleisher.
“It’s a very exciting and creative use of that property by the new owners of the mall.”
Fleisher says the name of the sporting goods store will be released at a later date.
Fleisher says the mall needs to constantly evolve to serve the needs of customers, and this project will help draw visitors.
“The retail space nationally continues to shift in a post-COVID world, but Cherry Hill continues to be a regional destination, and we welcome creative investments that keep that location thriving,” he said.
“I think that this new use is just all part of the strategy to continue to make the mall a multi-use destination.”
The mayor says preliminary demolition work has already begun. The major structural demolition will start in the new year. Before that, there are still some procedural and legal steps to complete, including zoning approvals.
