PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A woman was killed in a hit-and-run in South Philadelphia. Police say the victim was struck while she was crossing the street at Broad and Oregon. The driver is still on the loose.
The hit-and-run happened around 11 p.m. Monday. Police said a woman was crossing at Broad and Oregon when she was hit by the SUV driver who was going west on Oregon. Chief Inspector Scott Small said the victim did nothing wrong, she was in the crosswalk.
“[The victim] had the green light according to our cameras/eyewitnesses and the vehicle that struck her went through a red light,” Small said. “Struck her with such force that she was knocked out of both of her sneakers and she was launched westbound approximately 100 feet.”
She died at the hospital.
George, a South Philly resident who bikes around a lot, was not surprised this happened here because he says many drivers are reckless.
“They don’t pay attention to what they’re doing. Looking at the cell phone, speeding down the street,” he said.
Police said they will be going through surveillance footage, witness accounts and evidence from the scene as they continue to investigate this deadly hit and run.
