Starting next week, Pennsylvania officials say they will be cracking down on aggressive driving and toll jumpers on state roadways.

The PA Turnpike Commission said it’s a coordinated effort with state police, who will be issuing tickets and sometimes impounding cars with unpaid turnpike tolls, fees, and suspended registrations.

State police have license plate readers that can quickly identify the violating cars.

“By holding drivers accountable, deterring unsafe behavior, and enforcing the rules of the road, we protect every motorist who travels these highways,” said Cpl. Richard Levan of Pennsylvania State Police Troop T.

Drivers who accrue $250 in unpaid tolls and fees are referred to PennDOT to suspend their registration. The PA Turnpike said it has issued more than 200,000 suspensions since 2018 and more than 67,000 of those vehicles remain active in 2026.

In a press release, PA Turnpike CEO Mark Compton said the crackdown on violating drivers is a priority for the turnpike commission.

“This supports our commitment to managing a fair, equitable roadway system for our 550,000 daily customers – majority of whom follow the law and pay their tolls on time,” he said. “The best way to avoid being stopped is to pay what you owe today.”

Motorists are directed to EZ-Pass or Toll By Plate to pay their bills.

The initiative will begin on Wednesday, April 1.
