PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — With the colder months ahead, lawmakers from in and around Delaware County are joining forces to address energy affordability and reforms amid federal cuts.
Lawmakers and other leaders on Wednesday launched a new initiative called Building a Brighter PA at the Yeadon Public Library in Delaware County.
For Pennsylvania House Speaker Joanna McClinton, who represents both Philadelphia and Delaware counties, the new campaign addresses a major issue that she said constituents in both counties share.
“One of the top concerns that we get is, ‘Why is my electricity bill so high?’” she said. “A quarter of all households in our country give up food and medicine to keep the lights on.”
McClinton pointed to the rise in data centers and the Trump administration’s cuts to federal assistance programs as the main reasons those bills are rising. She said the new campaign is aimed at finding solutions to those problems.
“We have to stabilize our grid by bringing in new sources of power, and we also need to invest in clean energy jobs of today,” she said.
“This campaign is centered on both environmental justice and also protecting consumers,” said the speaker. “Translation: saving you money.”
The Democratic state representative said legislation is circulating in Harrisburg that encompasses Building a Brighter PA’s mission and called for bipartisan support in passing it.
