It’s peak wildfire season in New Jersey. Here’s what you need to know
New Jersey Forest Fire Service

SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Last year, wildfires burned more than 25,000 acres in New Jersey and gave the Forest Fire Service about all it could handle. Peak wildfire season is upon us again, and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is urging people to be mindful of the risks.

A combination of warming weather, high winds, and dry vegetation on the ground, with no canopy cover, makes for dangerous fire conditions.

“Many people are surprised to learn that New Jersey’s peak wildfire season is in the spring, typically running from mid-March to mid-May. So we’re here at fire season right now,” said Fire Chief Bill Donnelly.

New Jersey Forest Fire Service crews have been doing prescribed burns and clearing fire lines to prepare for the season.

“Ultimately, Mother Nature will have the final say on what this spring fire season will hold,” said Donnelly. “With the limited rain in the forecast for the next couple of weeks, we are expecting to be busy.”

So far this year, fire activity has been low compared to recent years, but that can change quickly.

Residents are advised to clean out their gutters, to remove any potential fuels sitting in there, and clear their yards so leaves, brush or other debris aren’t lying around as possible fire risks. They should also make sure their driveways are accessible for emergency vehicles.
