PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The largest union of PECO workers said its members are going on strike starting midnight on July 4, the first work stoppage in PECO's history.

“We did not come to this decision lightly; we know the impact that will be felt across Philadelphia and its four counties,” said Larry Anastasi, IBEW Local 614 president and business manager.

Members of IBEW Local 614 have been without a contract since April 1.

Workers want better pay and improved retirement benefits. They said their demands are not being taken seriously.

The union said many members are paid up to 30% less than workers doing the same job at other utility companies. PECO said they are offering a 20% increase over the life of the contract and that their benefits are in line with industry standards.

“This strike is about fairness and pushing back against corporate greed,” Anastasi said. “While executives collect millions of dollars, many of our members are paid up to 30% less than workers doing the same job at other utilities. We’ve exhausted every avenue to reach a deal. If PECO won’t invest in the workers who keep the lights on, we’ve got no choice but to stand together and demand the respect we’ve earned.”

PECO has previously said the utility company is prepared to handle a strike, and ratepayers do not need to worry about a work stoppage disrupting service.

Nicole LeVine, PECO’s chief operating officer, said they have not met since June 19, “although we have requested all day, every day, nights, weekends, and additional dates.”

The next bargaining session is scheduled for July 2. If nothing changes, hundreds of workers will walk the picket line.

“They never intended to bargain; they forced our hand because they think that this will divide us,” Anastasi said.
