PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It’s been talked about for decades but now tangible work is beginning to connect Old City with the Delaware River by way of an 11.5-acre grassy park on a cap over I-95 at Penn’s Landing.

PennDOT project manager Elaine Elbich says this is monumental and that drivers may soon notice activity between Front Street and the Delaware River as the general contractor, Buckley & Company, of Philadelphia starts preliminary work on the $329 million project.

“They’ll see early action items which are utility work, and then setting up field offices and probably some surveying, maybe some groundbreaking.”

Elbich added that large-scale demolition of bridge structures will take place later this spring, and there will be overnight detours.

“There’ll be closures on Christopher Columbus Boulevard and on I-95 when they’ll be setting beams or doing demolition above.”

A more specific detour schedule and construction timeline will be announced by the city, PennDOT and the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation in the coming months.
