PENNSAUKEN, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Another public event in South Jersey was forced to shut down early due to unruly crowds over the weekend. Six people were arrested, including two juveniles.
Police closed the Summer Kick Off event in Pennsauken Township early Saturday night. Police Chief Philip Olivo said multiple large crowds became unruly, so authorities shut down the event before the situation escalated further.
Six people — two juveniles and four young adults — were arrested. The adults range in age from 18 to 20. Each was charged with disorderly conduct and failure to disperse. Officials did not say if the juveniles would face charges.
Olivo said this type of behavior is unacceptable. He thanked officers from Camden, Burlington and Gloucester counties who assisted with dispersing the crowds and for doing an “excellent job in keeping the community safe.”
This is just the latest incident of a family event ruined by large, unruly crowds. Police made a dozen arrests at the Gloucester Township Day event on June 1. Similar events went off the rails in West Whiteland and Broomall, Pennsylvania.
Last month, during Memorial Day weekend, a teenager was stabbed on the Ocean City boardwalk. Another teenager was killed in a shooting at a carnival outside the Concord Mall in Wilmington, Delaware on May 11.
