PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia is set to show support for minority-owned businesses in the city with workshops and events to help them succeed.

The city’s 39th annual Minority Enterprise Development Week kicks off Monday, Oct. 2 with the theme, “It’s an Entrepreneur Thing: Shattering Barriers and Igniting Success!”

City Deputy Commerce Director Lynn Newsome says the more than 40 planned events and workshops range from how to build a business and how to manage the workforce to the financial aspects of being in business.

She says minority-owned businesses are an important driver for the city’s economy, and that minorities are also the biggest consumers of goods and services.

“And when minorities do not do well in their communities and have robust businesses to sustain their lifestyle, the economy suffers because they're not buying goods and services. If they're not working, the economy doesn't work,” she added.

“We're going to use the time we have together along with celebrating to educate and make sure that they have the tools that they need, not only to grow their business, but to sustain their business throughout the year and beyond into the next generation,” Newsome said.
