PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia's inaugural Black Tech Symposium has begun, a three-day virtual event working to help Black Philadelphians excel in this ever-growing market.
Blacks United in Leading Technology International (BUiLT) is hosting the event. The group's chairman, Peter Beasley, describes its purpose: "to help advance Black people in tech — that's getting into tech, advancing in tech, owning tech companies, getting funding for your tech company."
He explained many of the people participating in the event are looking for a career change from other fields, like education, and trying gain more personal and generational wealth.
"Technology is one of the vehicles that can level the playing field," Beasley said. "With a keyboard, with a mind, innovation, creativity, wealth can be generated for Black people that was unavailable before."
He added that the event is also hosting tech companies looking to better connect with an often-overlooked segment of the population that can help their business.
"Having symposiums like this helps people understand the value of diversity and inclusion," he said.
The event is also giving people a chance to connect with government leadership in Philadelphia for potential jobs with the city.
