PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A string of carjackings and incidents involving stolen cars, including two police chases, broke out across Philadelphia Tuesday night.
These incidents don’t appear to be related but are part of a problem that has been plaguing the city all year.
The first car chase happened in West Philadelphia. Police said officers were following a stolen car when the driver got out at Union and Melon streets. He ran off but was quickly arrested.
The other chase began in Port Richmond. Police were following a driver in a stolen green Mustang. He drove south on I-95, I-676 and eventually ended up in Fairmount Park.
Helicopter footage from NBC10 captured the moment the driver lost control and spun around in the park at Greenland Drive. He ran through the woods, but police eventually caught up to him and arrested him.
Over in West Kensington, police said a man was stabbed during an attempted carjacking at North Hancock and West Huntington streets. Then, police said a driver was shot during a carjacking around Fourth Street and Roosevelt Boulevard.
In both cases, no one was arrested, and the victims’ conditions were not released.
All these incidents followed a crash involving a stolen Kia at Rising Sun Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard late Monday night. Philadelphia police, in an update released on Tuesday, said the passenger who was ejected from the stolen car and died was a 16-year-old boy.
