PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The James Beard Foundation on Wednesday announced their short list of nominees for this year’s crop of awards recognizing culinary excellence across the country. The annual James Beard Awards, to be announced in June, are considered by many to be the “Oscars” of the culinary food world.

Philadelphia has a good showing among the 2023 nominees. Friday Saturday Sunday in Rittenhouse is nominated for Outstanding Restaurant, and Amanda Shulman, of Center City’s Her Place Supper Club, is recognized in the Emerging Chef category.

Ellen Yin, of High Street Hospitality Group (Fork, High Street, a.kitchen + bar), says it feels incredible to be nominated for Outstanding Restaurateur. Hoping to claim her first award in June, she says the recognition means a lot, and Philadelphia’s culinary talent is a great boost to the city.

“When you have the talent and nominations that Philly has received, it continues to support Philadelphia as a culinary destination, which we all know is good for tourism and conventions,” Yin said.

The most significant category for Philadelphia in the upcoming awards ceremony is Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic. Three of five nominees are from Philly: Nok Suntaranon, of Kalaya; Jessie Ito, of Royal Sushi; and Dionicio Jiménez, of Cantina La Martina. (Kate Lasky and Tomasz Skowronski, of Pittsburgh's Apteka, are also nominated.)

“It is so important for JBF to recognize women and minorities,” added Yin. “Many of the new chefs and restaurateurs are doing such good work for their communities, elevating their culture and building love for their team members.”

Winners will be announced June 5 in Chicago.
