PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Four new members of Philadelphia City Council were sworn in Monday, three weeks after winning special elections for their seats.

This was an unusually large swearing-in for a non-election year. The big group became the beneficiaries of four Council members who left to run for mayor in 2023.

Quetcy Lozada replaces her old boss, Maria Quiñones Sánchez, in the 7th District.

“I’m committed to working with government and public safety officials to improve our quality of life, and with the school district to ensure that our children have safe spaces to learn and our teachers have the resources to provide a successful academic journey,” said Lozada.

In the 9th District, young non-profit founder Anthony Phillips will replace Cherelle Parker.

“The greatest reward that anyone who’s done public service for a long time can get is an opportunity to serve more,” said Phillips.

Sharon Vaughn and James Harrity were elected to serve at-large, filling vacancies left by Derek Green and Allan Domb.

“The Councilman [Green] just said, ‘You only get one first,’ one first time to be sworn, in so I’m just looking forward to enjoying this day,” said Vaughn.

Harrity thanked his old boss, State Sen. Sharif Street, for giving him a second chance at public service after getting sober several years ago.

“If it wasn’t for him, I’d still be digging holes out on the highway, which I was proud to do,” said Harrity.

All four newcomers said they would run next year to hold on to their seats.

Council President Darrell Clarke says he expects them to get right down to business.

“As I promised them, there will be a stack of work on their desk next week,” said Clarke.

“I’m exited to have four new members. You can just see the energy and excitement in the room.”
