PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Here we go again. Philadelphia is coping with its fifth heat wave this summer, with temperatures on Wednesday expected to rise to the near triple digits.
An extreme heat warning is in effect on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Wednesday’s hot and humid temps are expected to reach the upper 90s and even 100 degrees, with the humidity making it feel even hotter. AccuWeather projects the heat index at up to 107 degrees.
Nearly triple digits are expected again on Thursday.
As the heat ramps up, Amtrak and SEPTA said there could be train delays as they reduce speeds to cope with the heat. Extreme temperatures can damage both the tracks and overhead wires.
Amtrak said it has crews positioned across its Northeast Corridor to deal with any potential issues that may arise. Some trains later in the day have already been canceled because of the expected heat.
Amtrak and SEPTA encouraged their riders to check their websites and apps for service updates.
There are also concerns about air quality, as smoke from Canadian wildfires enters the region and makes conditions hazy.
Officials said it’s best to stay inside with air conditioning if you can.
AccuWeather shared other advice:
- Drink plenty of water.
- Check on elderly relatives and neighbors.
- Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles.
- Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing outside.
- Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
