PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Several shootings and stabbings in the city over the weekend left at least four people dead, and sent about a dozen more, including at least three teenagers, to the hospital. The Philadelphia Police Department reported only one person of interest in custody in connection to any of the fatal shootings. Police say one person, arrested in connection to a stabbing that put a man in critical condition, may have also been involved in a separate fatal stabbing last week.
Homicide detectives are investigating the death of Tyre Watson, 38, found dead in the driver’s seat of a parked Chrysler on Friday. Officers responding to reports of a person with a gun on Pickwick Street, near Frankford Avenue, found Watson with gunshot wounds to the head and shoulder. He was pronounced dead on the scene. No weapon was recovered.
On Saturday around 3:30 p.m., police say they found an unidentified woman, who had been shot twice in the head, at Darrah and Pratt streets in the Frankford section of the city. She was taken to the hospital and later died.
On the same day, a 38-year-old man died after being shot twice in the head in Kensington. Police say a person of interest is in custody.
Later, around 9:30 p.m., SEPTA Police officers responding to reports of someone with a gun on Bridge Street near Mt. Sinai Cemetery, found 19-year-old Cyanni Hammond, pronounced dead at the scene with a gunshot wound to the chest. No weapon has been recovered in the homicide investigation.
A stabbing suspect and a shooting suspect in custody
Police say they arrested a 29-year-old man on Saturday afternoon, in connection to an early-morning stabbing the day before. Police say they found a man around 3 a.m. Friday, on Conlyn Street, near LaSalle University, who had been stabbed several times in the head with a knife. He is in critical condition. The motive is unknown.
Investigators believe the suspect is a family friend of the victim and that he may be connected to a fatal stabbing on North 5th Street, near Rising Sun Avenue, on Thursday afternoon. That’s when medics found Nancy Roman, 50, with stab wounds throughout her body, and pronounced her dead on the scene.
The suspect faces charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault.
Police say at least one person was arrested in connection to a double shooting, in Nicetown around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, that sent two 16-year-old boys to the hospital. One was shot four times and is in critical condition; the other was hit once and is considered to be stable.
A 14-year-old was also shot over the weekend, as well as several others who escaped life-threatening injuries.
SEPTA assaults
Two separate stabbings and a rape involved SEPTA locations.
On Friday, officials say, a 29-year-old man is expected to be okay after he was stabbed in the arm while on the Market-Frankford Line platform at 15th Street. And around 4:30 p.m. Sunday, a SEPTA spokesperson says, someone was stabbed in the station at 34th Streets. The condition of both victims is unknown at this time, and no one was arrested for either stabbing.
On Sunday, around 3 p.m., a woman reported to police that she was raped while aboard the Broad Street Line. The Philadelphia Police Department's Special Victims Unit is investigating, and a SEPTA spokesperson confirmed that the agency is reviewing surveillance video.
