‘Real popular’: Philly flagmaker struggles to meet demand for Ukraine flags

People are buying more Ukrainian flags than U.S. flags

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Ukraine blue and yellow flag is in demand, as people are buying them to show solidarity for the country being invaded by Russia.

Flagmakers, including some here in Philadelphia, are working overtime to fill orders.

“The Ukrainian flag is real popular right now,” said Tim O’Connor, the President and CEO of Humphrys Flag Company in Old City. They are hanging their own Ukrainian flag that’s 10 feet by 15 feet, right across the street from Betsy Ross’ house.

He said that to make the Ukrainian flags, they use material made out of U.S. government specification nylon flag bunting.

“We are having trouble. It’s a specific yellow and blue, so we are having trouble replenishing our stock, but stuff on its way,” he said.

“We have been manufacturing since around 1864, so we have been here a while. I’ve never seen a demand for many countries, but especially for Ukraine. There’s a lot of e-orders online and we are shipping all over the country. “

O’Connor said they’re selling more Ukrainian flags than American right now, and filling orders from all over the country.

The flags range from about $5 to $100. They are sold out of the smallest flag right now.

The demand for Ukrainian flags is so high, that Humpfrys is looking to hire people who can sew the flags.
