PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Ted Silary, a popular and influential high school sports reporter in Philadelphia, has died.
Silary covered the beat for the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin and for decades at the Philadelphia Daily News before retiring in 2013. He also ran his very popular website tedsilary.com.
It was a big honor for high school athletes in the area when Silary would write about them.
Tributes have been pouring in for him. His longtime editor Pat McLoone said he was truly dedicated to his beat.
“Ted was all about the young people and their stories and their hopes and dreams,” he told NBC10. “If you go back and you look at all the stories that Ted wrote, he very rarely quoted a coach or an administrator or anybody or a parent. It was always about the young person. He wanted to tell their story.”
Even when he was given the opportunity to cover major league sports on the national stage, he preferred giving a voice to youth.
“In 1993 when the Phillies went to the World Series in Toronto, the Daily News wanted to put its absolute best foot forward and put the best people we possibly could to cover it. … I was sending Ted, and Ted was furious,” McLoone recalled.
“Ted was furious that he was being sent to cover the World Series in Toronto because Gratz was playing Dobbins that day in football.”
Silary was 72 years old.
