PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An American bald eagle has died after being found injured, then taken from the Schuylkill River by animal rescue workers Wednesday afternoon.
The eagle was discovered on the Schuylkill beside Kelly Drive near the Girard Bridge past Boathouse Row in Philadelphia's Fairmont Park, according to NBC10.
It appeared that the eagle was using wood on the riverbank to stay above the water, as it seemed it was unable to fly.
The Philadelphia Metro Wildlife Center used nets and helped the eagle out of the river, NBC10 reports. However, they later reported that the eagle died of its injuries.
The American bald eagle is protected nationally under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
It is also protected under the Pennsylvania Game and Wildlife Code.
