Jury convicts Philadelphia man of double murder tied to drug sales in Kensington

Kevin Brogden will get an automatic life sentence behind bars

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A jury has convicted a Philadelphia man of a January 2019 double murder tied to drug sales in Kensington.

Kevin Brogden was found guilty of third-degree murder and gun charges in the shooting deaths of Stephanie Rann and Effrain Rivera. Both were found dead inside a car in the middle of Ontario Street, near F Street.

Another woman was shot in the shoulder, but she escaped and survived.

"The homicide department of the Philadelphia Police Department did an amazing job in investigating cell phone information contained in the decedent Stephanie Rann's phone," said Assistant District Attorney Jan McDermott.

"They triangulated phone numbers that used the same number that was in touch with the female decedent driver of the car."

McDermott said one of the most important pieces of evidence was video.

"Interestingly the [defendant] in this case ... covered his head as he ran past the grocery store to his home, which was one house in from the back of the grocery store. So only somebody who lived on that block, a half-block from where the murders occurred, would know to cover up their face, so they weren't captured by those cameras."

Brogden will be sentenced on Monday to an automatic life sentence behind bars, which, by law, happens when someone is convicted of two or more third-degree murder charges.
