PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia police say they have arrested a suspect in connection with a mass shooting last summer that killed a 17-year-old girl and wounded four other people.

Police say Isya Stanley, 17, helped promote a big meet-up in June that drew 200 people to Fairmount Park, near the Woodford Mansion, just to have a good time.

But Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore says two of the people at the party started shooting at each other, and Stanley was caught in the crossfire.

“This is the scary part of that — when 200 kids get together, and two kids want to have a gun fight, they’re all in a bad place,” he said.

“Everyone else that’s involved in this is just an innocent victim, was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Vanore says Zayaan Carroll, 17, is accused of being one of the shooters. Police recovered the gun used in the shooting during a routine stop and were able to trace it to Carroll, Vanore said. And investigators say phone records and other evidence tie him to the crime.

Carroll is being held in the Juvenile Justice Services Center. He’s represented by the Defenders Association, which declined comment.

Commissioner Kevin Bethel says the investigation continues to find the second shooter.

“Young people do what young people do. But there’s no reason they should be killed trying to have a good time and promote a party.”

Police believe the case is related to another mass shooting, from the Fourth of July, two weeks later, in Southwest Philadelphia, because that meet-up involved some of the same people.
