PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A few remaining candidates in the Philadelphia mayor’s race have picked up some high-profile endorsements.
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders endorsed Helen Gym Wednesday morning. In a tweet, he said Gym is “a fighter for working families. She has fought for strong public education, legislation to protect tenants’ rights, and healthcare for all.”
Gym has also attracted endorsements from other national progressive figures, including U.S. Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez.
Maria Quiñones Sánchez, who dropped out of the race last month, is throwing her support behind Cherelle Parker. In an email, Sánchez said Parker “has the lived experience that is essential to leading our city at this time. Philadelphians can see themselves in her.”
Parker said she’s humbled and honored to receive Sánchez’s support and will work for their shared values.
“Making sure there’s access to opportunity, especially for those from marginalized communities,” she said. “We want to make sure their voices are heard. They should be at the table.”
She now has two former City Council colleagues backing her bid for the job they also wanted. Derek Green announced his endorsement of her in April after dropping out of the mayor’s race.
Parker also got the nod from two locals — sanitation and highway workers — of the city’s blue-collar union District Council 33, which endorsed Jeff Brown in January.
